Often compared to Neon Tetras, White Cloud Mountain Minnow are excellent wee fish for beginners to the aquarium keeping hobby and beginner breeders.

White Cloud Mountain Minnow will want to eat any food you drop into their tanks. Live, frozen or flake foods. In the wild, their diet mainly consists of insects such as mosquito larvae, daphnia and shrimp. Feed them a good variety of dry and flake foods with live foods whenever possible. As they are schooling fish, Mountain Minnows should be in groups of at least six, but preferably more. They are peaceful fish and do well with other like-minded, small fish. Avoid larger and more aggressive species.

Mountain Minnows are sometimes kept in outdoor ponds because they can handle the colder temperatures and help control the breeding of mosquitoes. If kept outdoors, they cannot be live with larger fish as they will become a snack. They can be very sensitive to copper. In a tank, use a fine, darker colour substrate for Mountain Minnow. Make sure your aquarium has plenty of live vegetation, rocks and some driftwood. There should also be a clear area for Minnows to swim freely around. Use subdued lighting to bring out the fishes colours.

Distinguishing between Mountain Minnow sexes is difficult. But there are slight differences, males will be more slender and colour vibrant. When females are ready to spawn, their bodies will become fuller. Then mature males will display against each other, spreading their fins to attract a female’s attention. Mountain Minnows are great for beginner breeders. They spawn all year round as egg scatterers. Mountain Minnows are not so aggressive about eating their fry, the young will survive, so you can breed them in their original tank. Or set up a separate tank, add the most colourful fish (and hope their males), then add double as many females. Tanks will need a spawning mop or plants, so females have somewhere to deposit their eggs.

Feed adults live food before spawning. If using a separate tank, remove adult fish from the tank once eggs begin to hatch.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

White Mountain Minnows

I bought 6 white mountain minnows, they are great wee fish. A bit too small for my pond at the moment, so have them inside in a bowl with 2 baby goldfish. Am wanting 6 gold minnows as well. Always enjoy visiting Cam and checking out his aquariums.
