Popular for their bright orange colour, Ember Tetras are a stand-out fish for any aquarium.

A balanced diet will lead to happy fish. Embers will eat a mixture of plant and small invertebrates. Try a diet of flake and frozen foods to start with, then vary their food to ensure they get the necessary nutrients. Brine shrimps are a great source of protein and nutrients. You may also find them snacking on some of your plant from time to time, but do not worry. They are unlikely to eat enough to cause damage to the plants, as this is part of their normal behaviour. Embers have a gentle nature and suit community tankmates with the same temperament, they are an active species and committed middle dwellers. They will not venture to the top or bottom of your tank often. So, choose tank mates that will prefer these spaces so they will not cross paths.

Embers are shoaling fish. They will mind their own business from other species and will not be easy to bother. If your tank can accommodate them, aim for a shoal of at least 10 – 15 Embers so they can entertain their buddies. If kept alone, they can experience extreme stress that could cause death. Embers need tanks with high amounts of vegetation to mimic their natural environment.

Ember tetras are orangeish-red. Males and females look similar, but females appear with bigger bellies. Their abdomen will grow during the breeding period. Breeding for Embers is a straightforward process. All you should need to do is establish a breeding tank. Adjust the water parameters, so the pH reaches around 7, and a temperature of 26℃ (80℉) For Embers, this should encourage spawning. Once that is complete, remove the adult fish from the tank as they will likely eat the fry.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. We recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium to prevent such situations.
