The Emerald-Eye Rasbora is small fish found in blackwater lakes and ancient forest peat swamps. These areas are very dark due to the overhanging trees and organic matter present in the water. These are also very acidic habitats. This makes the Emerald-Eye Rasbora the ideal choice for a blackwater aquarium.

When setting up an aquarium specifically for these little fish, very little light or flow is needed. A sponge filter would work well. To create the desired dark environment, floating plants help to reduce the amount of light reaching the water column. Adding a mixture of Indian Almond leaves and alder cones while a few pieces of bogwood all help to create the perfect setting. As the leaf litter decomposes, they become a natural food source for these micro predators who will spend their time hunting microorganisms living among the substrate.

Not known for being fussy eaters, the Emerald Eye Rasbora can be fed pretty much anything and they will be happy. Although, they are micro predators in the wild which indicates they do prefer a high protein diet. We can provide this by offering a balanced variety of live, frozen and dry foods. Daphnia and brine shrimp are some of the best live foods to offer them due to their size.

Breeding Emerald Eye Rasboras is not too difficult when a few simple elements are provided. Like most other Rasboras, they are egg scatterers and in a mature aquarium, it is not unusual to find some random fry appearing unaided. However, to increase survival rates it is best to provide a small group with a dedicated breeding aquarium. Breeding mops or aquatic plants on the bottom of the aquarium help provide a place for eggs to attach too. A substrate of very coarse gravel will provide a refuge for any fry to grow.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy.  All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
