Coming back into popularity, Golden Flame Tetras are beautiful schooling fish and perfect for your community tank.

Golden Flame Tetras will eat almost anything you drop in your tank for them. Living and flake foods are all on the table. Also, feed them treats of frozen bloodworms. Feed Golden Flames several times a day, only with the food they can consume in three minutes or less. Golden Flames are schooling fish and will be happiest in groups of six but preferably as many as you can comfortably house in your tank. Keep them with other fish species of a similar size and temperament, as well as peaceful bottom dwellers. A mix of male and female Golden Flames will allow for healthier interactions and behaviours.

Golden Flames can withstand a wide range of consistently kept water temperatures. As they prefer low lighting, adding live vegetation can provide good cover and hiding spots. Low light will also allow their colours to develop better and show them off. Use a darker substrate like river sand. Some dried leaves would also suit the Golden Flames environment but will stain the water a light brown and need replacing every few weeks.

Male and female Flame tetra are very alike in physical appearance. But a male will have a tiny hook on his anal fin that can easily catch on mesh nets. If caught on anything, be careful not to damage it as males use these for mating. A females belly is rounder which makes their bodies deeper than males. Golden Flames are easy to breed, have no particular water parameter needs, and can spawn up to 500 eggs. Fry are hardy. Set up a separate breeding tank with small-leaved plants like Java Moss. For a week, keep males and females separated from each other and condition them on live foods. The temperatures of the tank should be on the higher end of what Golden Flames like. Eggs are deposited on plant leaves. Adults may want to feed on the eggs, so remove them from the tank.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document via a dated photo, water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels). Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or “disasters” i.e. a heater overheating. We recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium to prevent such situations.

Freight Charges: Please note that shipping or freight charges are non-refundable under all circumstances. We hope this guide makes our refund and guarantee process more understandable. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please get in touch with us at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz. We are always happy to assist. Thank you for choosing The Fish Room. Happy fish keeping!

Great smaller tetra.

I got a group of Flame tetra shipped in October 2021, all arrived in perfect health & coloured up very quickly after being added to their new home.
I decided to wait before reviewing them so I could give a longer term review of receiving shipped fish from the Fish Room & I can safely say all the fish they sent arrived healthy, transitioned to my water conditions quickly, without issue & all are not only still alive, but thriving 3 months later. Very happy with the service & have no hesitation in purchasing more fish from the Fish room in the future.
