The King Tiger Pleco is a peaceful species found in the rapidly flowing water of the Rio Xingu in Brazil where sadly their habitat is being destroyed due to development and pollution. It is popular species among Hypancictus keepers due to its peaceful behaviour.
With a maximum size of 14cm, they are suitable for most community aquariums but attention must be given to the filtration system used. King Tiger Pleco needs well-oxygenated water and crystal clear conditions. This can be provided by the use of a suitable internal filter or large external filter. Airstones and additional powerheads can be utilised to further oxygenate the water if needed.
As far as aquarium decor goes, add plenty of larger smooth boulders onto a soft sandy substrate with some branches and sturdy potted plants being used to create hiding spaces. We do not recommend adding more than a single Hypancistrus to prevent any hybridisation from occurring.
As juveniles, they are known to eat a variety of foods including algae and crustaceans etc. However, as they mature, they will lean towards a more carnivorous diet. Providing chopped mussels and bloodworm (live or frozen) along with chopped prawns and other larger meaty foods will be enough to maintain a healthy balanced diet.
The King Tiger Pleco has been bred by many fishkeepers of all levels of experience. Spawning takes place in caves with the make protecting the eggs/fry. A mature aquarium dedicated to the breeding pair is advised for best results.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy. All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
