The Red Whiptail Catfish is probably one of the most peaceful catfish available in the hobby today. They remain largely inactive and do not exhibit any territorial behaviour which allows them to be kept in small groups with ease. They are an interesting species to add to a biotope setup and will breed easily if the correct conditions are provided along with a well-kept system. The original habitat of this catfish is actually unknown. Some argue the idea that the red strain is the product of selective breeding.

Setting up the ideal aquarium is no different to that of other whiptail catfish. A soft sandy substrate covered in leaf litter makes them right at home.

A member of the Loricariids family means feeding is not a difficult task. This Whiptail Catfish will graze upon the biofilm and algae that grows on the surface of rock and wood. In the natural habitat of Whiptails, tiny crustaceans live in the algae and this should be replicated in the home aquarium by providing a mixture of catfish pellets, bloodworm & daphnia (frozen and live).

As far as breeding goes, Males will select a cave and a female. Spawning will occur and afterwards, the male will guard the eggs until they hatch.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy. All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
