Similis Cory is an uncommon species and rarer to the aquarium hobby than other fish. There is a high demand for it due to its dark violet colouration developed in maturity.

Similis are easy to feed. Use a good quality sinking pellet or tablet to ensure all the essential nutrients get to them. Feed them live or frozen bloodworms as protein-filled treats. Similis are schooling fish and need to be in large groups of their kind, at least six. But, the more, the merrier. Meaning they will be far more confident and active in the aquarium. Keep with any other peaceful community tankmates. But avoid those of a larger size or with more aggressive tendencies.

Similis can be sensitive to water quality. Consider frequent and large water changes for long term success with these fish. Use substrate that mimics river sand and use driftwood branches or roots for cover. A few dried leaves, like Beech or Oak (replacing them every few weeks), are the closest you would get to natural vegetation for Similis. These homey decorations will stain the water a weak tea colour. It is normal and expected. Yet, if you would like a planted aquarium, these Corys will adjust to that well with consistent water quality.

Determine the sex of the fish by viewing them from above. Females will be rounder bellied and broader in the shoulders, especially when they are full of eggs. Males will appear smaller. In a breeding tank, provide some vegetation like Java Moss. For the best results, keep a higher ratio of males to females. Recommended two males to one female. For Corys, it can take several years for them to mature, so if home breeding some patience. Males will pursue females, and a receptive female will allow them to caress her with his barbels. One egg fertilised at a time. When they spawn, laid eggs

will stick on the tank glass, usually where there is the most flow. Once spawning is complete, remove adults from the tank as they will likely eat their fry.
