The Zebra Danio are out of this world. No seriously, they have been on board the international space station as part of a study. Not only that zebra Danio but they have also been involved in medical studies since the 1960s. Due to the genetics of the Zebra Danio being similar to us humans, they are a very good species to study on.

When we consider these active, slender and black and white fish, the first thing that comes to mind is their very active behaviour. When in a group, they will swim almost constantly and while we like to think of them as peaceful fish, which they are, they can however be seen to nip the fins of tankmates from time to time. For these reasons, we would suggest avoiding tankmates like Guppies, Angelfish and Betta splendens.

In their natural habitat in India and Bangladesh, they can be found in a variety of environments. The ideal aquarium setup would be a long aquarium to provide ample space to swim. Aquatic plants are advised for the best contrast between the black and white of the fish and the green or red of the plants.

Another appealing feature of the Zebra Danio is their diet. When it comes to feeding, these little fish will eat almost anything you provide for them. We recommend a mixture of quality flake food, along with high protein granules. For the best colour and health, it is advised to offer some live foods like daphnia.

The Zebra Danio is often one of the first breeding projects suggested to us, and for good reason. They are prolific breeders, producing hundreds of eggs every other week. They do so by scattering their fertilised eggs. To breed successfully, it is advised to set up a separate aquarium with some thin-leaved plants and shallow water and larger grained gravel to allow eggs to fall between and out of the reach of their parents. Achieve a water temperature of 78F to trigger spawning and remove adults once spawning has taken place.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document via a dated photo, water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels). Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or “disasters” i.e. a heater overheating. We recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium to prevent such situations.

Little blue jewels

My fish arrived healthy and settled in quickly. I enjoy watching this lively bunch. I would have preferred short fin original variety, but since I had not been able to find any short finned ones for a long time, I am happy I bought the long fin variety to contrast nicely with my ( not long fin) golden barbs.

Super active

Fish arrived without delay & well packaged.
All very healthy & had good colour with-in seconds of being added to their new home.
Have had no losses, all eating readily & behaving normally from the moment they went into the tank.
