Riccia is often mistaken for moss. Understandable really when you consider the colour and shape of its tiny network of branches and foliage. However, Riccia is not a moss and is a plant, or more specifically, a liverwort species.
Riccia can be applied to your aquarium setting in much the same way as many moss species are used. Attaching to wood or left to float. Most commonly attached to wood, Riccia forms an interesting dense covering across any surface, which makes it a popular choice for aquascapers. Giving anybody the ability to create beautiful natural-looking underwater scenes fairly quickly.
Riccia was made popular by the late Takashi Amano, when he used it in one of his early aquascapers, completely submerged. While this is the most popular method of use, it is being used by many of today's aquascapers both submerged and emerged, allowing for even more creative freedom.
As far as aquarium plants go, Riccia is classified as an easy option and suitable for hobbyists of all levels. It will grow well under a medium to high light when placed lower down in the water. Riccia attached to wood slightly higher and even above the surface does not require any special lighting and a standard LED light will do the job. We do suggest that injecting CO2 will benefit all aquarium plants and Riccia is no different. When submerged, the CO2 will promote colour and growth rates will increase.
If you are looking for something a little different from aquarium moss, Riccia is a good choice. A little attention to its needs and you will have a very nice and natural-looking display in no time.
