The Zebra Pleco has become quite the sought after pleco and for very good reason. You only have to take one look at them to see their appeal. At first glance, you would be forgiven for thinking they are not real, their black and white sharp-lined pattern is like something you would find on a plush toy or maybe even in the saltwater section of your local aquarium. Yet these beautiful fish come straight from the Amazon, Rio Zingu to be precise. As their habitat is rapidly being destroyed thanks to the construction of several dams, the Zebra Pleco has become rarer and as such, wild-caught Zebra pleco are all but a thing of the past these days. Luckily for us, breeding the Zebra Pleco is not reserved for the elite aquarists and can be achieved in much the same way as most other Pleco species.

Setting up an aquarium for these beauties is also not an overly challenging process. Enjoying all the same things as most Amazon basin fish species, the Zebra Pleco will thrive in a setup with a soft sandy substrate covered in various leaves, cones and seed pods. Using bogwood and stones, construct lots of hiding places and decorate with many plants, including floating plants. These plecos are mostly nocturnal and are quite shy so having lots of places to hide and floating plants to break up the light, will create a much better environment.
When considering other tankmates, the best option is to house a male with 2 or 3 females in an aquarium themsleves. However, if you are looking to add a Zebra Pleco to your community tank, their ideal tankmates are small, peaceful species that mostly remain in the upper levels of the water. Small cichlid species such as Apistogramma can be considered but avoid pairs to prevent any aggressive behaviour.

Allowing a thin layer of algae to grow on the surface of any stones or wood will promote natural grazing behaviours but the provision of high protein food is much more important. The Zebra pleco will eat live foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp. This can also be given frozen. You can use tongs to target feed these shy fish to make sure they are getting enough food. Sinking pellets are also acceptable.

To breed Zebra Plecos, a dedicated aquarium is essential. One male with 3 females will reduce aggress and increase the chance of success. To stimulate breeding we must simulate their spawning season and to do this simply increase the water temperature to close to 28C and add a small air stone to oxygenate the water. This will cause the female to fill with eggs. At this point, your male will begin to chase a female and trap her in a cave to spawn. There is no need to remove any parents during the process.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy.  All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
