Cyperus Helferi is a popular aquarium plant despite not actually being an aquatic plant. Found growing along the banks of standing and slow-moving water in Thailand. Although it is not a fully aquatic plant, it is a species that does very well when acclimated to the aquarium setting which makes it an excellent choice for fishkeepers who are looking to achieve a natural biotope style setting for specific fish.
Due to its growth characteristics, the long leaves move beautifully with the water flow and look brilliantly natural when placed towards the back of the aquarium. That being said, they do not have very robust root systems and as such, they cannot withstand too much flow.
Cyperus Helferi is a lovely plant to add to any aquarium but does best in larger aquarium settings thanks to the size of the plant itself.
Due to the origins of this plant species not being aquatic, it does go through a transitional stage when added to an aquarium. This result is a certain level of die-off. An inexperienced fishkeeper would be forgiven for thinking the plant had died. However, given a few days, the remaining leaves will adapt and the plant will happily begin to thrive as long as high light and plenty CO2 are provided.
We recommend this plant for larger aquariums with lots of height.
