The Crescent Betta is a species that thrives in calm, slow-moving bodies of water, ranging from rice paddies and swamps to roadside ditches, streams, and ponds. These habitats are frequently adorned with submerged, surface, or marginal vegetation, creating shaded environments. Often, these waters may have low levels of dissolved oxygen. Moreover, water conditions undergo significant fluctuations, particularly during the annual monsoon season. The substrates within these habitats can vary widely, encompassing leaf litter, mud, sand, or deep sediment. While predominantly found in freshwater environments, some populations also inhabit brackish coastal swamps.

A well-planted aquarium with ample surface cover provided by tall stem plants, floating plants are idea. Cryptocoryne are also recommended. Driftwood can be added to help create shelters and hiding spots. Adding dried leaf litter not only offers cover but also promotes the growth of microbe colonies, serving as a secondary food source. It's essential to avoid strong water movement, instead, a gentle turnover with an air-powered sponge filter should be used. Additionally, ensure the aquarium is well-covered and not filled to the top to allow access to the layer of humid air above the water surface, as this species, like all Betta requires occasional access and is known for its jumping ability.

In their natural habitat, these fish are known to predate small aquatic insects and should be offered similar live foods when kept in the home aquarium. Providing them with a varied diet of brineshrimp, daphnia, bloodworm etc, supported by high quality insect meal based dry foods will insure your Betta thrives and produces the vibrant colours they are famed for.

Breeding these Betta is similar to breeding other Betta. This species is a bubble nester, requiring plenty of cover for the female. They spawn beneath the male's nest, and afterward, the male guards the nest while the female is no longer involved. The eggs hatch in 24-48 hours, and the fry remain in the nest for 3-4 days. They need infusoria-grade food initially, transitioning to micro worms and Artemia nauplii. Regular small water changes are essential.

keeping male and female separate prior to spawning is strongly advised. Additionally, once spawning is complete, female must be removed. The use of climfilm to cover the aquarium allows for a humid airtight setup which is essential to the development of healthy fry.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page, and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels) via a dated image. Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or "disasters", i.e. a heater overheating. To prevent such situations, we recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium.

Freight Charges: Please note that shipping or freight charges are non-refundable under all circumstances. We hope this guide makes our refund and guarantee process more understandable. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please contact us at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz. We are always happy to assist. Thank you for choosing The Fish Room. Happy fishkeeping!
