The Golden Tetra is a mild-mannered fish that, although its adult size, will not do well in an aquarium with many fish all competing for the same food. Ideally, their aquarium setting should consist of slower fish such as Angelfish, Apistogramma, German rams etc.

An ideal aquarium should consist of a fine sandy substrate and a variety of driftwood pieces. Aquarium plants are not found in their natural habitat however stem plants can be added for decorative purposes.

The diet of the Golden Tetra includes a wide variety of tiny insects, crustaceans and anything they can find. This should be provided in the form of live foods like Daphnia, Brineshrimp and bloodworm. The frozen equivalent is also acceptable. Quality dry foods like flake and granules can also offer a balanced diet in the home aquarium.

It is possible to breed the Golden Tetra in the home aquarium in a similar way to other egg scattering species. Setting up an aquarium with large grain gravel or mesh on the bottom to allow eggs to fall into will increase the survival rate of fry. Success has also been noted with the use of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.
