The Pearl Danio is a very undemanding fish and for that reason, very popular among fish keepers who are looking for a nice active species in their community aquarium. They are found in a variety of habitats in the wild, from rocky fast running rivers to rice paddies. This makes them suitable for all kinds of freshwater setups.

When considering an aquarium for the Pearl Danio, take in mind that they are very active and require at least 90cm length to provide adequate space for them. Ideally, a planted aquarium with soft sandy substrate covered in a variety of different sized river rocks would be best. Many fish keepers provide additional flow to resemble a flowing river. This can be achieved by adding a second powerhead at one end of the aquarium. A well fitted lid is also advised due to the reputation these fish have for jumping.

Their diet should consist of an insect-based food to resemble their natural diet. This can easily be offered in the form of live foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworm). To supplement this, offer a quality insect meal-based flake food such as Fish Science tropical flake food.

The Pearl Danio is an egg scattering fish and like most others, they do not display any parental behaviours. Breeding can be achieved by adding an adult group to breeding tank. Condition the adult group together in a small dimly lit 30l setup with reduced water levels.  Cover the base of the setup with a mess to allow any eggs to fall downwards and through the holes, away from the parents reach.

Slowly increase the water temperature to the higher end of the range above while increasing their diet to more live foods to condition them ready for spawning. After a few days, begin to slowly add cooler water. This will start the spawning activities.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document via a dated photo, water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels). Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or “disasters” i.e. a heater overheating. We recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium to prevent such situations.
