This is one very pretty looking fish. Even the natural form of this species is gorgeous. However, the flame-red variant showcases all the magnificent red colourings from its ancestors perfectly. If you are looking for a colourful, active and entertaining fish for the lower areas of your aquarium then this is the fish for you.
Due to the selective breeding process, this variant is very hardy and can be kept if a variety of different conditions as long as the aquarium has stability over anything else. Ideally, a soft, sandy substrate with leaf litter and a variety of branches across the aquarium should be provided. Creating plenty of different areas for hiding. If keeping a trio, it is a good idea to space out each hiding space to reduce any potential territory wars.
Breeding happens without much involvement needed from the fishkeeper at all. The female will care for the eggs and fry once they are hatched. At this point, it is good practice to remove your male. Females can become “hyper” aggressive while defending their young.
Feeding Apistogramma agassizi is not a challenging task however, being a carnivore species, their diet should consist of mainly high protein foods including live bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. Dry foods can include small granules etc.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy. All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
