One of the more iconic Gourami species in the hobby. Loved by fishkeepers everywhere because of their unmistakably gorgeous pattern and gentle personality within the community aquarium. Known to host the top section of the water column, the Pearl Gourami looks fantastic in an aquarium with lots of plants, including floating plants.

Although they have a reputation for being non-aggressive, it is not unusual to witness a bit if territorial behaviour amongst males of the same species. They are also known to be quite persistent towards females when they want to be. All of this is quiet easily manageable in the right setup. Lots of plants to provide cover and an aquarium large enough to accommodate them all.

The Pearl Gourami inhabits swamp-like bodies of water which often have little water flow. This is the ideal environment for many different crustaceans. As a result their natural diet consists of almost anything edible. In the home aquarium, you can replicate this with a variety of froze, live and dry foods.

Like other Gourami species, the Pearl Gourami is a bubble nest spawner and achieving success is not too challenging. To condition a pair for breeding, place them in their own dedicated aquarium but with a reduced water level of around 8 inches. Feed them lots of live foods until the female is showing a belly full of eggs. At this point the Male will build his nest on the surface of the water amongst the floating plants. The female will  embrace the male and eggs will be released with the male placing them in the bubble nest above. It is wise to remove the female at this point. The male will care for the eggs until they hatch and then he should be removed. Eggs take around 30 hours to hatch.

The Pearl Gourami is an absolute must have fish for all beginner fishkeepers.

All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, they are treated for any possible diseases and given a complete health check  to make sure they are health, happy and eating well before being placed in our display aquariums, ready for sale.

Dead on Arrival (DOA) Policy: In the unfortunate event that your fish arrives dead, please follow these steps: Within 12 hours of the delivery, take clear, unopened bag pictures showing the deceased fish. Send these photographs and your order number to our customer service email at getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or to our Facebook page and we will then offer a refund or store credit for the cost of the fish.

Two-Week Guarantee Policy: We stand behind the health and quality of our fish, which is why we offer a two-week guarantee starting from the day of delivery. If your fish dies within this time frame, adhere to the following procedure: Take clear photos of the deceased fish. Using a reliable test kit, document via a dated photo, water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite levels). Please email us the photographs, water parameters, and order number to getfish@thefishroom.co.nz or our Facebook page. After reviewing your claim, if approved, we will issue a store credit for the cost of the fish. Our two-week guarantee does not cover fish deaths due to unsuitable water conditions, incompatible tank mates or “disasters” i.e. a heater overheating. We recommend thoroughly researching each fish species' needs before introducing them to your aquarium to prevent such situations.
