The Keyhole Cichlid is often overlooked when stocking a community aquarium. You can be forgiven for assuming their size rules them out for such a setup however these lovely cichlids are among the most peaceful cichlids in the hobby. Yes, they can become defensive and territorial if breeding, but as far as predatory behaviour goes, fish as small as a few mm are safe and can live quite happily in the same tank. In fact, a group of small Tetra swimming around the tank can give confidence to the naturally shy Keyhole Cichlid.
They are found in slow-moving and dark tannic water, making them a great species to add to a blackwater setup. Ideally, a soft sandy substrate covered with leaf litter and other botanical debris should be used. The leaf litter will add a natural look while offering natural tannin and home to beneficial bacteria as the leaves decay.
As an omnivore, they will rummage around the aquarium all day in search of food. Most aquarium foods are accepted such as bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp as well as flake, pellet and granules. A balanced diet including high-quality protein and veg is key.
Breeding these fish is not a difficult task. As long as a few things are observed you will see a pair form and usually once a pair is formed, they stick together and raise their young. A substrate spawning species that will breed in a community setup. For better results, a dedicated aquarium is advised.
