The Blue Gourami is one of several colour strains that have become popular in the home aquarium trade. The easily identifiable pattern and colour make it one of the most recognisable fish in the hobby. Although often described as a peaceful community fish, it is important to know that as these fish age, they can become aggressive and territorial so care must be taken to provide the right tank mates.
Its natural habitat ranges from swamps, ditches and marshes. They thrive in heavily planted areas and draw air from the surface of the water.
Their diet consists of almost everything possible. A known omnivore that will readily eat algae, plant matter, small crustaceans and insects. All are readily available for aquarium feeding.
As a bubble nest breeder, these Gourami are quite easy to breed in the home aquarium. It is advised to set up a specific aquarium with a reduced water level and lots of floating plants. It is best to add one male and about 3 females for the best results.
While we regard these fish as community safe, we must acknowledge their tendency to be territorial. Adequate space and hiding places must be provided to encourage a peaceful environment. It is also wise to avoid housing two males together in a smaller aquarium. Like other species from this family, it is common for them to target other long-finned fish like Betta.
All our fish are quarantined on arrival for two weeks. During this time, we treat for any health issues that may occur during transport and ensure each fish is eating well and looking healthy. All fish are treated with Flubendazole before finally going on sale.
