For fish keepers, mastering the essentials of aquarium care is crucial to maintaining a healthy and balanced aquatic environment. After all, happy fish make happy fishkeepers, right? There is a wide range of parameters to monitor. However, the most critical factors to understand are KH (carbonate hardness), GH (general hardness), and PH (potential hydrogen) levels. These parameters play a significant role in the well-being of your aquarium inhabitants and can impact their health and longevity. This article explains aquarium KH, GH, and PH's roles in creating a balanced aquatic environment and practical advice on testing and maintaining these levels for optimal fish health.

Both apple snails and mystery snails are generally peaceful creatures. However, a few differences in their behaviour are worth noting. Apple snails are often more active and outgoing than mystery snails. They may climb to the water's surface to take in air and enjoy exploring their surroundings. Mystery snails, on the other hand, are more sedentary. They tend to stick to the bottom of the tank and are less likely to venture out of their shell. Additionally, apple snails are known for their "clutching" behaviour, laying eggs above the waterline. Mystery snails, on the other hand, lay their eggs underwater.
The Fahaka is an aggressive pufferfish from Africa. It belongs to the Tetraodon genus and has the scientific name Tetraodon lineatus. In a study, the maximum size range for Fahaka puffer fish was found to be 21-41 cm, or 8 to 16 inches (AbouelFadl, p. 4.2021), though this can vary quite a bit depending on the time of collection and the area where they are captured.
We used various methods to closely monitor the results and determine the most practical cycling method. Our test subjects included Seachem Stability dosing, frozen prawn, "mucky" water from squeezing out filter floss and sponges into the aquarium, established sponge filters taken from other aquariums, and an ammonia source (Dr Tims) as per bottle instructions. Each tank had five guppies added to it as the fish source. We conducted a test for ammonia each day for the first month, then relaxed the testing frequency as we noticed patterns occurring. In total, we used three API master test kits throughout this project.
